Riverbank Restoration

The southwest corner of the riverbank at South Lewis County Park has experienced gradual erosion over time. For public safety, this section has been temporarily fenced off. GTHH is interested in supporting appropriate long-term restoration of the affected shoreline in cooperation with Lewis County.

Project Goal

The goal of this initiative is to explore practical, environmentally responsible approaches to stabilizing the affected riverbank while protecting the natural character of the park. Any future restoration approach should consider public safety, shoreline habitat, erosion control, and the long-term sustainability of the site.

Current Status

GTHH is exploring opportunities to engage appropriate technical experts to help assess potential long-term restoration approaches. Any future restoration work would require coordination with Lewis County and applicable regulatory agencies. This early-stage review could help identify methods that are effective, environmentally responsible, and appropriate for the site.

Potential Restoration Approaches

Depending on future technical assessment and applicable requirements, potential approaches could include:

  • Native Vegetation: Establishing appropriate deep-rooted native plants to help stabilize soils and improve shoreline habitat.
  • Natural Materials: Using logs, woody material, rock, or other appropriate materials where needed to reduce erosion and support bank stability.
  • Bank Regrading: Reshaping selected areas of the bank, where appropriate, to reduce steep or unstable slopes.
  • Integrated Restoration: Combining vegetation and structural techniques where necessary to provide effective, long-term stabilization.

Long-Term Vision

The long-term objective is to support a stable, healthy riverbank that protects public access, complements the natural setting of South Lewis County Park, and contributes to the environmental health of the Cowlitz River shoreline.

As technical information and planning progress, this page will be updated with additional findings and potential next steps.
